Saturday 6th July dawned bright at a balmy 20 degrees – with blue sky’s it was perfect weather for our RYA Active Marina Ladies Day.
Eight brave ladies (Yvonne, Caroline, Susan, Sue, Susanna, Pamela, Ann & Gwenllian) from Portishead Quays Marina had signed up for an exciting and exhilarating day afloat with our expert instructors – Kath, Jake and Hannah.
The day started with introductions – although all the ladies are all bertholders at Portishead Quays Marina – its a big marina and we needed to get to know each other – one of the key aims of the day was to build friendships.
An introduction to safety equipment ensured that everyone had a serviceable lifejacket with crotch straps that was correctly fitted to them and we discussed all of the safety equipment that you would want to take afloat both on a sailing yacht and a motor cruiser.
Afloat we went! With a high water at around 1100 of 13.1m we headed out through the Portishead Quays lock gate into the Bristol Channel. Ladies took the helm of our powerboats to get to grips with planing speed manoeuvres, picking up a mooring buoy and the all important recovering a Man Over Board (MOB). But don’t worry no-one really got wet in our MOB drills – we had some great efforts recovering our fenders.
We faced a busy lock back into their marina followed by a fantastic homemade lunch by Portishead Quays Marina’ s Danielle – a great spread of sandwiches, pasta salads, continental meat and cheese selection coupled with some tasty chips and dips and yummy fruit for dessert.
Our final session of the day was essential Ropework teaching our ladies how to throw lines to lasso cleats, bow line and stern line mooring techniques along with learning how to tie the queen of all knots – the bowline!
What a day! Fantastic weather, a calm Bristol Channel, eight strangers who made some brilliant new friendships, mastered some great crewing skills and boosted their boating confidence levels. Onwards and upwards Ladies!!! You can see what we got up to in the video below:
