Passage Planning Workshop

Our half-day Workshop breaks down the steps required to put together a good and workable passage plan.

In line with SOLAS we use the APEM methodology and put together a typical passage in the Bristol Channel e.g. Portishead to Swansea or even further afield to Milford Haven.

Passage planning and pilotage are basically about safety and enjoyment – making sure you have considered, and are prepared for, all eventualities going both in and out of port and everything in between.

Passage planning is effectively just good common sense. But, as we know, common sense isn’t always that common.  When planning your passage we break it down into all the elements that could potentially pose you a problem.

Our workshop looks at a typical passage in the Bristol Channel e.g. Portishead to Swansea or even further afield to Milford Haven.

We consider each of these factors as a starting point:

  • weather forecast
  • tides
  • fuel consumption
  • boat limitations
  • onboard safety equipment
  • navigational dangers including shipping lanes
  • crew experience and physical condition
  • basic boat maintenance equipment
  • required paperwork
  • provisions

We consider the 4 stages of passage planning appraisal, planning, execution, and monitoring as specified in International Maritime Organization Resolution A.893(21), Guidelines For Voyage Planning.

Ability after workshop:

At the end of this workshop you will be able to apply good practice passage planning methods to create your own passage and pilotage plan.
