A good understanding of tides greatly enhances your ability to get afloat by opening up new areas to explore, improving how long you can stay afloat and ensuring that you don’t end up running aground.
This half day workshop looks at the basics of tides, how to use a tidal curve to calculate the height of tide, calculating the strength and direction of the tidal stream , introduces secondary ports and looks at the wide range of electronic aids to calculating tidal heights and streams.
The Theory: Your instructor will introduce you to:
- Basic tide theory – what makes the tides
- Reading tidal information from an almanac
- Predicting tidal heights using a tidal curve
- Calculating tidal direction and flow – using tidal stream atlases and tidal diamonds
- Secondary port calculations
We will also review the wide range of on-line tidal information sources and provide some recommendations on tide apps for your smart phones/tablets.
Ability after workshop:
You will be able to find the correct tidal information from a range of sources, calculate the height of tide using a tidal curve and calculate simple secondary port tidal times and heights.
