Competent Crew (Sail)

A course for anyone looking to get into sailing.

This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.

May be run alongside a Day Skipper Practical Course – great if you are looking to book for 2 or more who have different levels of sailing experience.

Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her:

  • Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners

This course is residential and you will stay on board our sailing vessel throughout the course.

Pre Course Experience: No Prior experience is required

This course can be run as follows:

  • 5 days
  • 3 blocks of 2 days i.e. 3 weekends
  • 3 days plus 2 days

For 5 day courses these will commence at 0900 on Day 1 and finish at approximately 1600 on Day 5.

Minimum age 12 years old. All Under 18’s MUST be accompanied by a paying adult.

This course operates with a maximum of 5 students per instructor/vessel however we usually operate with a maximum of 4 students on board

The Competent Crew handbook is included in your course fee – the RYA Yachtmaster Syllabus and Logbook is available to purchase during your course.
