From novices through to ocean going yachtsmen/women – Our shorebased navigation and seamanship courses and workshops are designed to help you unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology. They are great as stand alone courses, but also complement our various practical training courses.

Classroom based Courses
The Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course is an inspiring online course for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving – or pretty much anything else on the water! This RYA online theory course will give you the essential knowledge needed when you’re afloat, from navigation to safety and seamanship and passage planning.
The course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew, and those wanting to refresh their skills. In fact it’s for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.
Level – Intermediate
A 6 day course to equip you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. Can be taken as:
- a 6 day block,
- 2 x 3 day blocks or,
- Evening classes (22 x 2 hour sessions)
A comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. Invaluable for learning how to start making decisions on board and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course.
Level – Advanced
Advanced training for more experienced skippers aimed at those who have already successfully completed the Day Skipper theory course or are of an equivalent standard. building on the Day Skipper course. This course equips you with the skills to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.
Ideal for candidates for the Coastal Skipper practical course & Yachmaster Offshore exam. Some revision of the Day Skipper shorebased course plus more advanced skills in offshore & coastal navigation by day & night, pilotage & meteorology
Level – Advanced
A 6 day course to learn the art of Astro Navigation and the key concepts of planning Ocean Voyages. A course in astro navigation, worldwide meteorology and passage planning, which also unravels the mysteries of the sextant.
Teaches advanced techniques to those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage, and for commercial Skippers or Mates planning on operating more than 150nm from a safe haven

This course will introduce you to the principles of astro navigation, the practical use of the sextant, the measurement of time, position fixing by the sun and stars, compass checking and great circle sailing.
You’ll also study the concepts of worldwide meteorology, including tropical revolving storms, and passage planning for ocean voyaging
