Powerboat Courses

Whether you are taking your first steps into the world of powerboating, have already gained some experience or are working your way to the pinnacle of the RYA Training Scheme – the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence we have a wide range of Powerboat Courses to suit all abilities.

For beginners we offer the Powerboat Level 1 and Powerboat Level 2 courses designed to help build confidence, master the basics and start your skippering journey on small powerboats.

For those with some powerboating experience at a more intermediate level we offer the Day Cruising (Intermediate) course looking to develop your skippering and navigation skills with a focus on coastal navigation.

If you have significant powerboating experience then you are aiming for the Advanced Powerboat course and then potentially onward to the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence Exam Preparation and Exam.

All motor cruising courses are run on board our 6m Humber Ocean Pro RIB Endeavour. Courses can also be run on board your own vessel.

Looking to get out on the waters of the Moray Firth and experience the fun of powerboating?
Get afloat for a half day session with one of our expert instructors and have a go at the helm of our RIB Endeavour.

No prior boating experience is necessary

Great for families / friend groups looking for something a bit different!

This 1-day course is the starting block for all ages – we aim to spend the majority of the day afloat in our RIB Endeavour.

Provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment

Learn to drive a powerboat in just 2 days!

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to to become a competent powerboat driver by day in familiar waters and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

This course can also be the first step on your journey to working commercially in the marine business

The Day Cruising course aims to teach you to take the powerboat beyond just line of sight destinations and learn more about both traditional and modern navigational techniques including the use of a range of on-board electronics including RADAR.

You will spend time working on passage planning and pilotage skills which you will put into practice by completing a slightly longer coastal trip.

Run over 2 days and a evening (night exercise), the Advanced Powerboat course is designed to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in coastal waters. 

Addresses areas such as night navigation, using on-board electronics, rough water handling and search patterns – a great course! 

Courses all use our Raymarine Axiom plotter and Quantum Radar as part of a #digitalfirst planning and pilotage methodology.

Courses usually run Between mid September and End March

The top level commercial and leisure qualification for boaters seeking to operate powerboats with up to 12 passengers in Cat 3 waters (20nm from a safe haven by day and night)

Please check the CoC exam pre-requisites carefully to ensure that you meet the criteria.

Preps and Exams usually run Between September and April.

Intended for operators responsible for ferrying passengers between Superyachts and the shore, this course is very useful for anyone operating a powerboat day or night with responsibility for carrying passengers.

Courses usually run Between September and April.
