Course Details

Originally intended for operators responsible for ferrying passengers between Superyachts and the shore, this course is very useful for anyone operating a powerboat day or night with responsibility for carrying passengers.
Courses usually run Between September and April.
Please note we do not operate this course during the summer months.
The focus of this course is on ensuring those that undertake the course have the skills necessary to helm and manage a craft carrying passengers/guests both by day and night. The course includes plenty of time to practice working with a crew member and operating short-handed. In navigation terms, the emphasis is on short ship-to-shore transfers by day and at night
The course will cover:
- Pre-departure procedures for tender operators
- Drive systems onboard superyacht tenders
- Life Saving Apparatus (LSA)
- Fuel and mechanical checks and diagnosing basic engine start problems
- Passenger safety and comfort in waves and at planing speed
- Dealing with non-compliant passengers and those under the influence of alcohol
- Dealing with less mobile passengers and children
- Strategies for ensuring the safety of non-English speaking passengers
- Shorthanded anchoring, beam-to, bow-to and stern-to docking
- Recovery of MOB by day and night
- The principles of towing and being towed
- Apply the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
- Passenger Briefings
- Effective management of an emergency situation by day and at night
- Produce and use effective day-time and night-time pilotage plans
- Chartplotter and waypoint navigation
The vast majority of the time on this course is spent on the water and out of the classroom.
This course was created jointly by the RYA and the Professional Yachting Association.
Aimed at superyacht deck crew who will be carrying out guest transfers between the yacht/anchorage and the shore this course is also very useful for anyone operating a powerboat day or night with responsibility for carrying passengers.
- Candidates should be competent to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2 Powerboat Handling with Coastal endorsement.
- It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid and VHF / SRC operators certificate.
- The course is run over 2 days and includes a night exercise on the first evening.
- Courses start at 0900 and the finish time for day 1 will vary depending on the season to cater for the night exercise (usually 3 hours after sunset).
- Day 2 starts at 0900 and finishes at 1700.
Minimum Duration: 2 days including night passage

This course operates with a maximum of 3 students per instructor/vessel

What you need to bring, What’s Included and What’s Not!
- Passport Photograph – essential for us to issue your certificate.
- Your certificates/Powerboat Logbook i.e. RYA Intermediate certificate, VHF-SRC, Theory certificates
- Suitable Clothing: warm clothing ie. thin thermal layers, fleece, gloves, hat as well as sunglasses and unblock.
- Suitable Footwear: Deck shoes, Boots, Trainers.
- We provide waterproof clothing – if you have your own you are welcome to use your own equipment.
- We provide lifejackets – if you have your own you are welcome to use if – it must be a minimum of 150N and have been serviced in the last 12 months.
- Free Use of our waterproof clothing for the weekend – You are welcome to use your own equipment if you wish however they must be suitable for boating and clean and tidy with lifejackets of a minimum of 150N serviced within the last 12 months.
- A fully serviced lifejacket – min 150N
