
RYA Diesel Engine Course
A one-day beginners course to help you prevent and solve diesel engine failure.
Mechanical failure is the main cause of rescue call-outs to cruisers. Basic maintenance and engine care will help ensure that you are not part of this statistic. Most engine problems can be avoided by taking simple precautions, and you don’t need a detailed mechanical knowledge.
This course teaches you how your engine works, how to keep it healthy by using basic checks and maintenance procedures, and how to get it started again in the event of a breakdown.
The course will give awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine and the ability to prevent breakdown at sea & rectify defects not requiring workshop support. This course includes basic maintenance and engine care which will prevent most cases of engine failure
Course is equally applicable to both Sailing and Motor inboard diesel engines.
Course topics include:
- The four stroke cycle,
- fuel, cooling and air systems,
- engine electrical systems,
- spares and tool requirements,
- winterisation and servicing
The Diesel Engine course is ideal for:
- Anyone setting to sea on a diesel engine vessel
- Those looking for an introduction to how diesel engines work and simple maintenance steps that do not require workshop support.
No prior experience is necessary
9am-5pm with approximately 45 mins for lunch
Minimum Duration: 1 day
There is no minimum age for this course however all students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult
This course operates with a maximum of 8 students per instructor
